The Publication Date for ISO 9001:2026 Has Been Announced
An important stage has been reached in the ongoing ISO 9001 revision process. According to ISO’s latest announcement, the new edition of ISO 9001 is expected to be published in September 2026.
As one of the world’s most widely used management system standards, the new edition of ISO 9001 will replace ISO 9001:2015.
Why Is ISO 9001 Being Revised?
The ISO 9001 revision aims to ensure that the standard remains relevant, adapts to changing conditions, and better responds to the evolving needs of the business environment. The revision process has drawn on various sources, including assessments, systematic review results, and the needs and expectations of users of the standard.
Key Changes in the New Edition
The update aims to clarify certain topics without fundamentally changing the existing structure of the standard. Among the key updates announced by ISO are a stronger emphasis on leadership, quality culture, and accountability, as well as greater clarity regarding the approach to risks and opportunities.
An Annex A section is also being introduced to support a clearer understanding of key concepts and requirements, while greater alignment with other ISO management system standards is being pursued.
Current Status of the Revision
According to ISO’s latest records, the standard has now reached the “International Standard under publication” stage.
What Should Organizations Expect?
Organizations currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 will be provided with a transition period to adapt to ISO 9001:2026.
While the new edition is expected to largely maintain the fundamental structure of ISO 9001, areas such as leadership and quality culture, clearer treatment of risks and opportunities, and improved alignment with other management system standards are expected to receive greater emphasis.
How Can Organizations Prepare?
Until the new edition is published, organizations can review and assess their existing Quality Management Systems. Once the new standard is released, they can conduct a detailed gap analysis based on the updated requirements and develop an appropriate action plan.
